Poincaré and the Idea of a Group

چکیده

In many different fields of mathematics and physics Poincaré found many uses for the idea of a group, but not for group theory. He used the idea in his work on automorphic functions, in number theory, in his epistemology, Lie theory (on the so-called Campbell–Baker–Hausdorff and Poincaré–Birkhoff–Witt theorems), in physics (where he introduced the Lorentz group), in his study of the domains of complex functions of several variables, and in his pioneering study of 3-manifolds. However, as a general rule, he seldom appealed to deep results in group theory, and developed no more structural analysis of any group than was necessary to solve a problem. It was usually enough for him that there is a group, or that there are different groups. In this article Jeremy Gray gives a brief history on Poincaré’s group idea.

Classifying the Epilepsy Based on the Phase Space Sorted With the Radial Poincaré Sections in Electroencephalography

Background: Epilepsy is a brain disorder that changes the basin geometry of the oscillation of trajectories in the phase space. Nevertheless, recent studies on epilepsy often used the statistical characteristics of this space to diagnose epileptic seizures. Objectives: We evaluated changes caused by the seizures on the mentioned basin by focusing on phase space sorted by Poincaré sections. Ma...

On the general solution of the d’Alembert equation with a nonlinear eikonal constraint and its applications

Kaluza [1] was the first who put forward an idea of extension of the four-dimensional Minkowski space in order to use it as a geometric basis for unification of the electromagnetic and gravitational fields. Nowadays, Kaluza’s idea is well-known and there are a lot of papers where further development and various generalizations of this idea are obtained [2]. In [3–5] it was proposed to apply fiv...

The Influence of Poincaré’s Thoughts on the Origins of Random and Chance in Works of Marcel Duchamp and John Cage

Chance is a broad concept which has become an important factor in linking science and art in the twentieth century. Simultaneously, concept emerged as a new scientific paradigm in Arts by Henry Poincaré and especially Marcel Duchamp, who has affected many artists such as John Cage, one of aleatoric music pioneers .This paper investigates the differences and similarities of the chance concept in...

Bifurcation and Chaos in Size-Dependent NEMS Considering Surface Energy Effect and Intermolecular Interactions

The impetus of this study is to investigate the chaotic behavior of a size-dependent nano-beam with double-sided electrostatic actuation, incorporating surface energy effect and intermolecular interactions. The geometrically nonlinear beam model is based on Euler-Bernoulli beam assumption. The influence of the small-scale and the surface energy effect are modeled by implementing the consistent ...

Analysis of 3D Passive Walking Including Turning Motions for the Finite-width Rimless Wheel

The focus of studies in the field of passive walking has often been on straight walking, while less attention has been paid to the field of turning motions. In this paper, the passive motions of a finite width rimless wheel as the simplest 3D model of passive biped walkers was investigated with a focus on turning motions. For this purpose, the hybrid model of the system consisting of continuous...
